Parts Work
Understanding All the Parts of You
Parts Work, a therapeutic approach rooted in internal Family Systems (IFS) theory, is particularly helpful in addressing trauma because it allows individuals to explore and heal the inner parts of themselves that have been shaped by painful experiences. Rather than viewing symptoms or behaviors as problems to eliminate, parts work encourages compassionate curiosity toward these aspects of the self—such as the inner critic, the protector, or the wounded child.
By understanding the roles these parts play, often as protective mechanisms developed in response to trauma, individuals can build a sense of inner safety and self-leadership. This approach fosters integration and healing by helping people access and support the vulnerable parts of themselves with empathy, ultimately reducing internal conflict and promoting a deeper sense of wholeness.
